The European Castles Institute

The European Castles Institute

is an institution of the German Castles Association.

It is open for public. It has a special library, with 25.000 books about castles, 125 actual journals and other documents dealing with ancient monuments, as there are plans, photos, post cards videos and cd-rom.

Beside the books about castles, there are books dealing with medieval history, history of art, books about landscape gardening, descriptions of journeys, myths and legends.

But the European Castles Institute continues the research. It collects and taps resources to the subject castle, files estates and organises academic conferences, seminars and study trips. To know all the castles all over Germany, their names and their history is one of the most important aims in the next years.
If this will be achieved, many questions which are still open can be answered. For example:

How many castles are there in Germany?
Where are the most of them situated?
Which castles can be visited?

The centre of the work is always the castle as an element of medieval history. Numerous scientists will have to participate in it. This shows the journal "Burgen und Schlösser" which appears four times a year. It is published by the German Castle Association as well as a serial of books.

And last but not least, Philippsburg Castle itself is worth a visit.
